Two oxyacids

Nitric acid is HNO₃; nitrous acid is HNO₂. They differ in oxygen count and oxidation state. Nitric acid is an important industrial chemical; nitrous acid is unstable in many conditions.

Nitrate and nitrite

Nitrate is NO₃⁻ and nitrite is NO₂⁻. Sodium nitrate, potassium nitrate, and ammonium nitrate are examples of salts. Their uses and hazards depend on the full substance and context.

Fact capsuleNitrate has three oxygen atoms; nitrite has two. One subscript can carry a whole lesson.
