Atlas: organic nitrogen compounds

Organic chemistry includes amines, amides, nitriles, nitro compounds, azo compounds, and diazo compounds.

Functional groups

Amines relate structurally to ammonia; amides connect carbonyl groups to nitrogen; nitriles contain a carbon–nitrogen triple bond. These groups affect shape and reactivity in context.

Materials and medicine

Nitrogen-containing molecules appear in dyes, polymers, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and natural products. A functional group alone does not determine a molecule's safety or usefulness; consult compound-specific sources.

Fact capsuleTwo molecules can contain nitrogen and behave nothing alike; the rest of the structure gets a vote.
