Atlas: nitrogen oxides
Nitrogen forms several oxides including NO, NO₂, N₂O, N₂O₃, N₂O₄, and N₂O₅. Their structures and properties differ substantially.
Not one substance
N₂O is nitrous oxide; NO is nitric oxide; NO₂ is nitrogen dioxide. NO and NO₂ feature in air-quality discussions, while N₂O has distinct climate and medical relevance.
Higher oxides
N₂O₃ and N₂O₅ connect to nitrous and nitric acid chemistry. NO₂ and N₂O₄ can exist in temperature-dependent equilibrium. Compound-specific references and safety data matter.
