Nitrogen in heat treatment and metallurgy
Nitrogen is used in some metal-processing environments to reduce unwanted contact with oxygen. Its role depends on alloy, temperature, and process goals.
Protective atmospheres
During annealing and other heat treatments, atmospheres can affect oxidation, surface finish, and material properties. Nitrogen may be used as a carrier or protective gas, sometimes in blends designed for the alloy and furnace.
Nitrogen can join the material
In some alloys and surface treatments, nitrogen affects hardness, phase stability, or corrosion behavior. A gas suitable for one furnace or alloy may not suit another; qualified process design matters.
