N₂ as a chemical starting material

Molecular nitrogen is stable, so converting it into useful compounds takes energy and carefully designed processes. Ammonia is a central industrial bridge.

An engineered ammonia gateway receives N₂ and H₂ and issues NH₃ with a comically long energy bill.

The ammonia gateway

In Haber–Bosch synthesis, nitrogen reacts with hydrogen to form ammonia over a catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure. Industrial plants manage equilibrium, heat, pressure, catalysts, and gas recycling; this is an overview, not an operating recipe.

What ammonia leads to

Ammonia is used for fertilizers and as feedstock for nitric acid and other chemicals. Nitrogen-containing products include polymers, fibers, intermediates, and medicines. Energy sources and hydrogen production shape the process footprint.

Fact capsuleN₂ is abundant feedstock but a reluctant reactant; industrial chemistry supplies the invitation.
