What nitrogen is used for
Nitrogen's uses follow from two different properties: N₂ is relatively unreactive in many settings, while nitrogen compounds are chemically diverse.
The gas applications
Gaseous nitrogen is used for inerting, purging, blanketing, laboratory gases, electronics, metal treatment, and selected food packaging. Purity and delivery requirements vary by use.
Liquid and compound uses
Liquid nitrogen cools or freezes materials and supports research and biological storage. Ammonia-based fertilizers, nitric acid, polymers, and biomolecules contain nitrogen atoms in transformed chemical forms, not unchanged N₂.
