Industrial inerting and purging
Inerting and purging use a gas such as nitrogen to reduce oxygen or displace another atmosphere in equipment. These are engineered operations with important safety controls.
Related but different
Purging generally displaces or dilutes a gas mixture. Inerting aims to reduce the likelihood of combustion by controlling oxygen. Terms and targets depend on process, materials, and standards.
A process hazard and a people hazard
Nitrogen may help manage oxidation or fire risks, but does not make equipment safe to enter. Oxygen displacement can be fatal in confined spaces. Engineering plans, gas testing, ventilation, isolation, and trained teams are essential.
