How industry separates nitrogen from air
Commercial nitrogen is usually separated from air, which already contains abundant N₂. The method depends on required purity, scale, location, and product phase.

Cryogenic air separation
Large air separation units cool and separate air using differences in component boiling points. They can supply nitrogen, oxygen, and argon at industrial scale. Liquefying and distilling air takes energy and engineered equipment.
Membranes and adsorption
Membrane systems separate components by different permeation rates; pressure-swing adsorption uses materials that selectively retain molecules under changing pressure. Purity and flow depend on system design. “Nitrogen” does not automatically mean ultra-high purity.
