N₂O, NOₓ, and other nitrogen oxides
Nitrogen oxides are a family. NOₓ often means nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), while nitrous oxide (N₂O) is a distinct long-lived greenhouse gas.

Names matter
N₂O, NO, and NO₂ are different molecules. NOₓ is a contextual collective term, commonly used for NO and NO₂ in air pollution. Use the formula or define the abbreviation.
Different environmental roles
Combustion can produce NOₓ, which participates in atmospheric chemistry. N₂O is produced naturally and by human activities including agriculture; it contributes to warming and stratospheric ozone chemistry.
