Nitrogen beyond Earth: Titan and Mars

Nitrogen is found on other worlds, but its atmospheric share varies. Titan has a dense nitrogen-rich atmosphere; Mars has a thin atmosphere dominated by carbon dioxide.

Titan's nitrogen sky

Titan's atmosphere is mainly nitrogen with methane. Sunlight and energetic particles drive chemistry that creates complex molecules and orange haze. Its surface lakes contain liquid hydrocarbons, not water.

Mars keeps nitrogen in the minority

NASA fact sheets give Mars about 2.7% nitrogen by volume, with most of its thin atmosphere carbon dioxide. Atmospheric compositions and isotope measurements help scientists study planetary histories.
