The discovery of nitrogen
Nitrogen's story began when scientists asked what remained after oxygen was removed from air. The gas was encountered before its elemental identity was understood.

An eighteenth-century puzzle
Henry Cavendish and Joseph Priestley obtained residual gas while studying air in the 1760s. Daniel Rutherford described it in 1772 and noted that it did not support combustion or respiration like oxygen.
Names and industrial change
The name nitrogen reflects its relation to nitrates; azote was another historical name. In the twentieth century, Haber–Bosch ammonia synthesis transformed agriculture and industry and increased human movement of reactive nitrogen.
