Nitrogen fertilizers and crop nutrition

Nitrogen is an essential plant nutrient and a major component of fertilizers. Fertilizers provide reactive nitrogen, but timing and amount matter.

A measured nutrient delivery feeds a crop while a vegetated buffer catches a comic runoff droplet.

From ammonia to crops

Haber–Bosch ammonia can be used directly or converted into urea and ammonium or nitrate fertilizers. Plants mainly take up nitrate and ammonium and incorporate nitrogen into organic molecules.

Efficient use

Management considers soil, crop, weather, timing, placement, and other nutrients. Excess can be lost by leaching, runoff, volatilization, or microbial conversion. Better nutrient planning can support yields and reduce avoidable losses.

Fact capsulePlants need nitrogen, but “more” is not automatically “better.”
