One nitrogen atom, many chemical identities

The letter N can mean a nitrogen atom in a formula; N₂ means a molecule containing two nitrogen atoms. In compounds, nitrogen bonds with other elements and takes on different roles.

A molecular costume room where N₂ tries labeled NH₃, NH₄⁺, NO₃⁻, and N₂O outfits under a chemist's supervision.

Read the formula

N₂ is elemental nitrogen gas. NH₃ is ammonia, NH₄⁺ is ammonium, NO₃⁻ is nitrate, and N₂O is nitrous oxide. These are distinct substances. A formula gives atom counts; a structural formula also shows connections.

From stable gas to compounds

Breaking the strong N≡N bond takes energy. Once converted into reactive forms, nitrogen moves through biological and chemical pathways, becoming part of amino acids, nucleic acids, soils, and waters. The subscript 2 is not decoration.

Fact capsuleN₂ has two nitrogen atoms; NH₃ has one nitrogen bonded to three hydrogen atoms.
