Formula: N₂
Nitrogen is a chemical element with the symbol N; and ordinary nitrogen gas is the diatomic molecule N₂. Same letter, different level of organization.
Nitrogen gas consists of two bonded nitrogen atoms. Their triple bond is very strong, so the molecule is relatively unreactive under normal conditions.
Open molecular file ↓Each N₂ molecule contains two nitrogen atoms connected by a triple bond. This is among the strongest common chemical bonds; N₂ cleavage and conversion therefore require suitable conditions, energy or catalysts.
Nitrogen is a chemical element with the symbol N; and ordinary nitrogen gas is the diatomic molecule N₂. Same letter, different level of organization.
The N≡N bond has a high bond enthalpy, about 945 kJ/mol in the RSC data. The molecule is therefore kinetically very stable under normal conditions.
At room conditions, N₂ is a colorless, odorless gas. It is about 78% by volume in dry air.
At normal pressure, nitrogen boils at about 77.4 K or −195.8 °C. Liquid nitrogen is used as a cryogenic coolant, but can cause severe frostbite; the displacement of oxygen in a poorly ventilated room poses a risk of suffocation.
Do not try at home: cryogenic liquids belong in the hands of qualified persons and in the appropriate equipment.
Although N₂ is a major component of air, most plants and animals cannot use it directly. Some microorganisms can fix atmospheric nitrogen and convert it into chemical forms that enter the biological cycle. Industry, however, converts N₂ into ammonia in the Haber–Bosch process.
We expect a very high offer for n2.si. If the offer is shorter than your phone number, we will let it rest in the inbox — without enough energy, no reaction is triggered. Let the sum be connected at least as tightly as N≡N. We do not consider or respond to low bids. There are two mandatory questions before the form.
The form is unlocked only after two correct answers.
1. Which symbol represents a molecule of nitrogen gas?
2. At approximately what temperature does liquid nitrogen boil at normal pressure?
The form is locked. Answer both questions.
